Where to Stay on Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is located in the Northern Sierra Nevada’s. The lake is split almost in half, California on one side, Nevada on the other. It is one of the biggest and clearest lakes in the United States. Lake Tahoe offers activities such as fishing, skiing & snowboarding, hiking, biking and photographing beautiful views.

When I was planning my trip to Lake Tahoe this summer I was trying to decide where on the lake to stay. This also depends on the type of vibe you’re looking for or the activities you are planning to do when you are there.

South Lake Tahoe–

Offers Vegas-type casinos, Heavenly Village & Mountain, lots of restaurants & bars, live music, and breweries. Almost everything is walking distance or close enough to rent a Bird scooter and ride to. The “beach” wasn’t very beach-y and the water was mucky in some parts. However, it was a close drive to Emerald Bay & some very scenic hiking trails.

Stay in South Lake Tahoe if…
You like to gamble, looking for a more exciting and loud atmosphere, don’t mind driving to a nice beach or a hike, and are looking to spend a little less money on an accommodation.

Tahoe City-

A winding bike trail that goes out to Olympic Valley & Palisades that boasts views of the Trukee river, quaint downtown area, restaurants with lake views, adventure parks and river rafting.

Stay in Tahoe City if…

You are traveling with kids or family, don’t mind spending a little more on accommodations, are looking to spend time exploring the surrounding area, or rent a boat from a nearby marina.

North Lake Tahoe-

Includes Crystal Bay, Incline Village, and boasts some of the best views on the entire lake. Great for outdoor activities such as mountain biking, zip lining, and hiking. North Lake Tahoe is also less than an hour drive from the Reno airport.

Stay in North Lake Tahoe if…

You are looking for a more rustic quiet setting, looking to camp, like to shop, or a relaxing getaway with a partner or family. As well as wanting to be in a close range to an airport.
